Edwardian seed pearl and turquoise oblong gold ring
This gold oblong ring is a beautiful pavé ring from the turn of the century where Victorian styles were giving way to Edwardian fashions. The ring top is set with a central line of Persian turquoise cabochons surrounded by an elliptical halo of seed pearls.
Seed pearls were popular in the Victorian and Edwardian era, and referred to pearls which were naturally occurring and usually around 2mm and under, the size of a poppy seed on average. As such, these pearls having survived over a century show a very wide variation in their hue and lustre. It is important to note that all sizes and styles of natural pearls are very susceptible to erosion and damage incurred by and absorption of oils and acids from handling, and any exposure to perfumes or cosmetics of any kind can be detrimental to their natural beauty.
In contrast to the gemstones aforementioned, the band of the ring is a warm 10 karat gold, being not quite rose but not yellow either.
